Mumbles Community Association and Go Underhill are looking to set up a youth branch of the organisation.

The opportunity is open to young people between the ages of 11-18 who live in Mumbles and the surrounding area.

The team of young people will be responsible for shaping how Underhill Park works for the young people who use it.

Alex Deeks, Trustee for Mumbles Community Association, joined the organisation towards the end of last year.

"My background is with the Prince's Trust and I used to be a teacher, so I've got half an eye on the young people in the area and how they experience our area," she said.

"Often our local teens are viewed in a negative light, particularly when it comes to the park. People sometimes think that they're up to no good in there, but more often than not, they're not."

Ms Deeks said that the aim of the group is to have input on what local teenagers want to see in their parks, and to give them a feeling of ownership and responsibility over the space.

The group will meet on a regular basis to address issues important to young people and to get their input on future projects.

"This is a chance for young people in Mumbles to make their local park work for them, to be involved in something that is a really positive project for our community and to give something back.

"It's their chance to have their voice heard, to be able to shape things so that their local park works for them."

The youth branch will form part of Go Underhill, a long-term plan by the Mumbles community to transform Underhill Park and its facilities.

Mumbles Community Association submitted a planning application to Swansea Council for phase one of the development of Underhill Park in July, which has now been granted formal approval.

Proposals for the park include replacing the changing rooms with modern facilities, new toilets, a community space with a café, and the development of an all-weather pitch with floodlighting.

Young people who wish to be involved in the new youth committee should get in touch with Go Underhill.
