New data has revealed that the Mayals and Bishopston ward has one of the lowest rates of Coronavirus in Swansea.

Out of the 31 wards in Swansea, the Mayals and Bishopston area has the 27th lowest rate, with West Cross coming in at 22nd, West Gower at 20th, and Mumbles and Newton at 18th place on the list.

Cases for December 27 to January 2

Mumbles and Newton: 31

West Cross: 25

Mayals and Bishopston: 19

West Gower: 26

What does this data mean?

The latest update for Covid-19 cases has been released by Public Health Wales. It is based on the rolling seven-day average between December 27 and January 2.

It is important to note that because this data covers small areas, it is very volatile – where an area has a very small population, even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly.

For instance, Ravenhill and Pontarddulais have exactly the same number of cases in this seven-day period (37) but the number of cases per 100,000 of population is different, at 439.1 and 553.4 respectively.

Ravenhill has a larger population than Pontarddulais, which means that its number of cases per 100,000 is lower. Similarly, because Pontarddulais has a smaller population than Ravenhill, its rate of cases (per 100,000 of population) is higher.

Swansea Bay Health Board announced yesterday that over 80s in the Swansea area would start receiving invitations from their GP next week about vaccinations against the virus.
