The £13.8m upgrade of Bishopston Comprehensive School remains on track, despite the pandemic, according to the leader of Swansea City Council.

"A new two-storey extension that includes science labs and a state-of-the-art drama studio will be ready to use when learners return to school," Rob Stewart, leader of Swansea City Council, said.

"Contractors Kier Western Ltd have handed over the new block to the school and will now move on to phase two at the front of the site."

The development, which is on track to be completed by the end of 2022, is being jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme, Cllr Stewart added.

It is part of a £150m investment in school infrastructure in Swansea under Band B of the programme.

The school had to close for a few days last autumn while roof repairs were carried out after heavy rainfall damaged 10 classrooms and the library.

A new external rain garden has also been created, with plans to continue developing the area throughout the spring and planting season.

Bishopston Headteacher Jeff Bird said: "It's going to make such a difference to the whole school community.

"Many thanks to the Welsh Government and Swansea Council. The pupils are going be quite surprised when they come to see the progress that has already taken place."

The work includes the demolition of existing sub-standard demountable buildings, a new two-storey modular extension building, a new build reception area and internal remodelling and refurbishment.

Kier Western Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor and is using local workers and suppliers where possible as well as creating apprenticeship and work experience opportunities.

The development will be carried out in phases and is due to be completed by the autumn of 2022.

Jennifer Raynor, Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills said: "This major investment will address the current condition of the school buildings and provide modern, flexible teaching facilities to create distinct faculty areas to meet the changing demands of the curriculum.
