Residents warned of scammers impersonating police officers to steal bank details
Mumbles Community Council has warned residents after receiving reports of scammers impersonating police officers.
In a Facebook post yesterday, the community council said that they have had reports that residents in Swansea are having phone calls from scammers impersonating police officers in an attempt to steal bank details.
"They either inform the victim that there has been fraudulent activity on their bank card, or a member of the family has been arrested," the council wrote in the Facebook post.
"The scammer will ask that you contact the police immediately by dialling 999 or 101.
"The scammers do not hang up so the telephone line remains open, even if the victim has hung up, so when the victim dials 999 or 101 they go straight back to the scammer who will make out they are another person.
"Always wait at least five minutes to make a call for the line to clear or try calling a friend or family member."
The council advised residents to be suspicious if they receive a phone call that they were not accepting.
They asked residents to remember that the bank and the police would never:
- Ask for your bank account details or PIN number over the phone. Do not disclose these to anyone, no matter who they claim to be.
- Ask you to withdraw money and send it to them via a courier, taxi or by any other means.
- Ask you to send your bank cards, or any other personal property, to them via courier, taxi or by any other means.
