Mumbles Community Council has secured a 125-year lease on Underhill Park.

The Community Council said that this will help them, alongside the Mumbles Community Association, to provide improvements to the park.

In a video announcing the lease, Councillor Martin O'Neill, Chair of Mumbles Community Council, said: "This will give us the opportunity to bring to fruition the plans we have here.

"We've got an application in to the Welsh Government for significant funding. We've managed to identify funding from the Lottery fund as well.

"So bringing this all together is a really great opportunity for the community, and this is something we've been working towards for a long time now.

"Bringing all these different things together, we will be able to do changing rooms, public toilets, playing fields as well, and it's something that this community has wanted for a long time."

The Community Council are now seeking approval from the Welsh Government for an £840,000 loan to underwrite the project. It anticipates a decision to be made by the end of this month.

In a statement, Cllr O'Neill added: "This decision by Swansea Council will be welcomed in Mumbles as it opens the way, after many years, to making progress on providing sporting facilities in Underhill Park.

"I know that many members of the Community Council are motivated by driving forward real changes in our community and now through the initiative we have a chance of seeing progress."

Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, Cllr Robert Francis Davies said: "We are delighted to have been able to work with Mumbles Community Council recently to make progress on the much-needed improvements in Underhill Park.

"It has long been the aim of the Council to improve sporting facilities for the public across Swansea, and hopefully this will add Mumbles to the communities of Llansamlet, Penyrheol, Morriston, and Hafod where this has already been achieved."
